What is wrong with my windshield wipers?

The windshield wipers on my truck have a problem. Whenever I engage them, they are slow moving and make a screeching noise while they are on. When I turn them off, they travel to the middle of the windshield and stop instead of returning to the correct

Most likely the wiper motor is shot. Sometimes it is a matter of cleaning and lubricating the wiper motor assembly however it shouldn't be much to pick up a wiper motor and just change it and be done with it.
